I'm having trouble drawing organometallics in Chem3D. How do I draw ferrocene, for example?
There is a Cyclopentadienyl substructure in the substructures table that can be used to build ferrocene. Type Cyclopentadienyl in the text replacement box in Chem3D, and press the Enter key. This will place a Cyclopentadienyl on the screen in Chem3D. Deselect the Cyclopentadienyl, then press the Enter key again. Now you should have two separate Cyclopentadienyl models. Draw a bond from one of the red dummy atoms that appears in the middle of the ring. At the other end of the bond, change the Carbon atom into Iron, draw another bond from the Iron to the other red dummy atom. Please note that MM2, will not do an accurate job of minimizing the structure. MM2 does not recognize the dummy atoms.
