When I print a Word document containing ChemDraw structures, the bonds and atom labels are out of alignment and/or some bonds are thicker than others.

When I print a Word document containing ChemDraw structures, the bonds and atom labels are out of alignment and/or some bonds are thicker than others.

This problem does not occur in Word X.

In previous versions of Word, MS Word/Mac positions ALL graphics according to a 72 dpi grid. Because of this, atom labels may shift for some structures.

First, try copying and pasting the ChemDraw structure into Word again. Make sure the Include PostScript and the Include LaserPrep options are ON in the ChemDraw Preferences (File menu) before copying.

If that does not help, try turning the Optimize Pictures for High Resolution Non-PostScript Printing option ON in the ChemDraw Preferences (File menu), and then copy and paste into Word and print.

Also note the following:

1. When ChemDraw prints to a non-PostScript printer, it makes certain calls that tells the printer to print at 300 dpi. Word does not make these calls for pasted graphics, so it prints at 72 dpi, a lower resolution, thus the thicker bonds.

2. If you copy and paste to Word with PostScript and LaserPrep on (the default settings), and print to a PostScript printer, only the PostScript information is used, which tells the printer to print at a high resolution, so the thick bond problem does not occur.

For the best output from Word, you should use a PostScript printer.
