Problem:
How to create your own symbol set for the short number format to represent values like millions, thousands, etc., with a symbol in Spotfire.
Solution:
By default, the standard short number format is present in the formatting section for the Number category. A standard symbol set is already defined and available to use. The defined symbols in this standard symbol set are M for 10^6, and k for 10^3. You cannot delete or change the standard symbol set. However, you can add your own symbol sets and define symbols of your choice. To add a symbol set:
- Open the TIBCO Spotfire Analyst/Client, then select "Tools > Options" from the main menu.
- In the left-hand pane of the "Options" dialog, select "Axis Formatting".
- In the "Options" dialog's right-hand pane ("Axis Formatting"), select the "Number" category, then click on the "Edit Symbol Sets" button at the bottom of the pane. This will open the "Edit Symbol Sets" dialog.
- In the upper part of the "Edit Symbol Sets" dialog, click on the "Add..." button. This will open the "Add Symbol Set" dialog.
- In the "Add Symbol Set" dialog's "Name" text field, type a name to be used for the symbol set, then click on the "OK" button. This will close the "Add Symbol Set" dialog, and it will also add the new symbol set into the "Edit Symbol Sets" dialog's "Symbol set" drop-down list (as the drop-down list's current selection).
- Note that the "Defined symbols" list box for the new symbol set is empty.
- Click on the "Add..." button to the right of the "Defined symbols" list. This will open the "Add Symbol" dialog.
- In the "Add Symbol" dialog, select a number in the "Exponent" field, then type the text string to replace it (letters only) into the "Symbol" text field, then click on the "OK" button. This will close the"Add Symbol" dialog and add the new Symbol entry to the "Defined symbols" list for the new symbol set.
- In the "Edit Symbol Sets" dialog, click on the "OK" button to close the dialog.
- In the "Options" dialog, click on the "OK" button to close the dialog.
- Restart the TIBCO Spotfire Analyst/Client.
