Problem:
TIBCO Spotfire Server configuration tool fails to open with the error "Could not establish contact with the database: Login failed for user 'domain\username'".
Solution:
When trying to open the TIBCO Spotfire Server configuration tool (see Opening the configuration tool for more details) the following error gets logged even though the Spotfire Server is up and running. From the tools.log:

This issue occurs when you are using Integrated windows authentication on Microsoft SQL server database (see Setting up the Spotfire database (SQL Server with Integrated Windows authentication) for more details). If the user trying to launch the TIBCO Spotfire Server configuration tool does not have sufficient access to the Spotfire database, then the above error is seen in the tools.log.
To resolve the issue, ensure the user logged on who is trying to launch the configuration tool has db_owner permissions to the Spotfire Server database.
