Signals Notebook allows users to use various operators in the search process. Below is a list of different operators you can use when searching in Signals.

+ | Signifies AND operation. The AND operation is used in text search to find documents that contain at least one occurrence of each of the query terms. | Benzene +Cyclohexatriene returns Benzene AND Cyclohexatriene |
| | Signifies OR operation. The OR operation is used in text search to find documents that contain at least one occurrence of any of the query terms. | Benzene | Cyclohexatriene returns Benzene OR Cyclohexatriene |
- | Negates a single token. The minus operator is used in text search to find documents that contain one query term and not another. If the minus is part of the query then you should put the query value between quotes. | Benzene -Cyclohexatriene returns Benzene NOT Cyclohexatriene |
" | Wraps a number of tokens to signify a phrase for searching. | "Benzene Sulphonate" returns the documents containing the term "Benzene Sulphonate" but not the documents where both words are just present |
* | An asterisk at the end signifies a prefix query. | Ben* returns documents containing words starting with Ben for example: Benzene, Benzoate, Benzyl, etc.... |
(and) | Signify precedence. The (and) are used for grouping operands. | "Benzyl | Alcohol +Acetate" means that "Benzyl Alcohol" and "Benzyl Acetate" will find matches |
"Benzyl | (Alcohol +Acetate)" means that "Benzyl" and "Alcohol Acetate" will find matches | ||
~N | Used after a word signifies edit distance (fuzziness). The N is the number of single letter edits (substitution, addition, deletion) or swaps to get to a match. | Benezne~2 returns the documents containing the word Benzene |
Used after a phrase signifies slop amount. The N is the max number of changes in a phrase that are allowed to find a match including inserted or deleted words or transpositions. | "Benzene C6H6"~4 returns all the documents where the word "Benzene" is followed by any four words and then followed by "C6H6". In our example, the query returns all the documents containing the phrases "Benzene with the chemical formula C6H6", "Benzene is always written as C6H6", "Benzene ring with six carbon C6H6 is the most common Lewis structure drawing", etc.... |
