Product:TIBCO Spotfire Desktop
Versions:All
Summary:
In the standalone Spotfire Desktop client, there is no mechanism for saving a Spotfire data function (or anything else) to a Spotfire Library, because Spotfire Desktop never logs into Spotfire Server. But the standalone Spotfire Desktop client does provide a way to export a Spotfire data function to an external *.sfd file, then import it into a different Spotfire analysis. This can also be done in the Spotfire Analyst client.
Details:
Spotfire Desktop is the standalone Spotfire desktop client that never logs into (and cannot login to) a Spotfire Server instance.
Spotfire Analyst is the desktop client that must log into a Spotfire Server instance at least once after installation, to download and install the updatable desktop client software modules that have been deployed for it on Spotfire Server.
The Spotfire Library is a feature of Spotfire Server that is stored in its housekeeping database (the "Spotfire database"). It is only available to the Spotfire Analyst desktop client while Spotfire Analyst is logged into Spotfire Server. The Spotfire Library is not available for use by the standalone Spotfire Desktop client.
Because of this, there is no mechanism available for the standalone Spotfire Desktop client to save anything (analysis, data function, SBDF file, etc.) to a Spotfire Library.
It is possible for Spotfire Desktop to export a Spotfire data function to an external file, however.
Resolution:
The standalone Spotfire Desktop does provide a way to export a Spotfire data function to an external file.
(You can also do this in the Spotfire Analyst desktop client, even while Spotfire Analyst is not logged into Spotfire Server.)
For a Spotfire analysis (DXP file) that already contains a Spotfire data function, you can use the following steps to do this:
(1) Open the analysis in the Spotfire desktop client (Analyst or Desktop).
(2) Select "Data > Data function properties" from the Spotfire desktop client's main menu.
(3) In the "Data Function Properties" dialog, select the data function to be exported.
(4) Press the "Data Function Properties" dialog's "Export to File..." button.
(5) In the "Save As" window this opens, press the "Save" button.
(6) If your data function's name is "test" (for example), the data function will be saved as a Script Function Definition (*.sfd) file with the filename "test.sfd".
(7) In the "Register Data Functions" dialog, press the "Close" button.
In a Spotfire analysis that you want to import this "test" data function into, you can use the following steps to import it from the "test.sfd" file:
(1) Select "Tools > Register data functions..." from the Spotfire desktop client's main menu.
(2) In the menu at the top of the "Register Data Functions" dialog, press the "Import" button.
(3) In the "Open" window this opens, navigate to the location where the "test.sfd" file was stored.
(4) Select the "test.sfd" file, then press the "Open" button.
(5) Note that the "Register Data Functions" dialog now contains the imported data function's fully populated "Script", "Input" and "Output" tabs.
(6) In the menu at the top of the "Register Data Functions" dialog, select the "Run" button.
(7) In the "Edit parameters" dialog this opens, use the "Input" and "Output" tabs to connect the imported data function to appropriate input and output parameters in the Spotfire analysis, then press the "OK" button.
(8) In the "Register Data Functions" dialog, press the "Close" button.
