Signals Notebook: Resolving "Invalid data provided for creating item" Error When Uploading ApE-Generated .dna Files

Problem

When attempting to upload .dna files created with ApE (A Plasmid Editor) to Signals Notebook, users encounter an error message stating: "Invalid data provided for creating item. Please check the input and try again."

Root Cause

Although ApE allows saving files with a .dna extension, the file format it generates is not compatible with the standard .dna format expected by Signals Notebook. This format mismatch causes the validation error during upload.

Solution

To successfully upload DNA sequence data from ApE to Signals Notebook:

1. In ApE, use the "Save As" function.
2. Select one of these Signals Notebook-compatible formats:
   • GenBank format (.gb or .gbk)
   • FASTA format (.fasta)
3. Upload the newly saved file to your Signals Notebook experiment.
