What bar code readers, and bar code printers does Inventory Manger support/recommend? 

Any barcode reader capable of emulating keyboard input (keyboard wedge) is compatible with Inventory Manager.  The user can select any field in Inventory to use the barcode scanner as input instead of typing to populate the text box.  There are many brands/models ranging from $100 to $1000 each. A couple of suggestions include Symbol Laser Touch 1806 or Symbol LS2106 HotShot. 

We will also support uploading some generic delimited text files so that data can be collected with memory type scanners or pda's.  The Symbol SPT 1740 is a nice hand held memory scanner.  Some consulting may be required to reformat scanner output for import into Inventory Manager.

A Wireless barcode scanner support pack (sdk) is available for the Inventory Manager system.  Initial support is limited to the Compaq IPaQ PDA using a Symbol Technologies SPS 3046 Expansion Pack which provides wireless bar-coding capabilities to the hand-held computer.

The support pack will enable users to perform routine tasks such as receiving, retiring, moving or reconciling inventory containers via a hand-held computer.  All operations will be updated to the Oracle server in real time.

Barcode printing occurs via our report writer which in turn uses MS Access as the reporting engine.  We provide a barcode ActiveX control which can produce high quality barcodes as printable images.  Any windows printer can be used to print barcode labels.  For extreme applications such as high volume, small size, high resolution, we recommend a printer specifically designed for barcodes.  We have tested with Zebra printers.  Prices range from the Zebra z420 ($400) to the Zebra 90IIIxi ($4000).

As for label stock the Zebra Z-ultimate line seems to be the most chemically resistant.  Also keep in mind that the system supports the use of preprinted barcode labels which simplify the receiving process and provide better quality and durability than labels printed on demand.
