Which selections in the Spotfire desktop client's Tools menu must use TERR? Could they use open-source R instead?
Which analytical selections in the Spotfire desktop client's Tools menu must use TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R (TERR)? Could they use open-source R instead?
If the only available TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services (TSSS) instance has been configured to use open-source R, can Spotfire Web Player or Automation Services send the TERR scripts that implement these features to that TSSS/R instance?
The following analytical selections from the "Tools" drop-down menu in Spotfire 7.11.1 LTS (for example) do not use TERR:
Data Relationships...
K-means Clustering...
Line Similarity...
Hierarchical Clustering...
The following selections do use TERR, via built-in data functions:
Regression Modeling...
Classification Modeling...
In addition, the "Lines & Curves" feature's Holt-Winters Forecast line uses TERR, via a built-in data function.
In the Spotfire desktop client, the scripts for these features' data functions are sent to the desktop client's own built-in local TERR engine.
~~~
By design, all Spotfire features that are implemented with built-in Spotfire data functions use TERR. Their scripts are of type "TIBCO Enterprise Runtime for R", and the scripts cannot be sent to open-source R for processing.
That will not change, because open-source R is not a TIBCO product, and those built-in data functions need to be implemented using only TIBCO products.
In Spotfire 7.14 and earlier (including Spotfire 7.11.1 LTS), Web Player and Automation Services both need a URL connection to a TSSS/TERR instance, to make those features work.
~~~
Starting with Spotfire 10.0.0, customers who have purchased both Spotfire Server and TSSS can download and deploy the new TERR Service (TERRSRV) node, which provides another way for Web Player and Automation Services to run those built-in data functions' TERR scripts. The following public knowledge base article provides additional information on TERRSRV:
