Description
Newman projections are a way of visualizing the conformation of a molecule by looking straight down a specific bond. ChemSketch supports Newman projections both via dedicated templates and by manipulating a 3D model in 3D Viewer. The template method is best for quickly drawing standard Newman projections; the 3D Viewer method is useful when you already have a 3D structure and want to inspect or illustrate a particular conformation.
Solution
- From the Templates menu, choose Templates Window.
- In the dialog box that appears, from the drop-down list select Newman Projections
- Click on a Newman projection template and then click a second time to paste the item into the ChemSketch drawing area
A similar result can be obtained by opening 3D Viewer (from the ACD/Labs menu).
- Select the molecule and click Copy to 3D on the on the bottom bar.
- If the molecule is flat, from the Tools menu choose 3D Optimization.
- Click and drag to rotate the molecule so that you are looking straight down the desired bond, mimicking a Newman projection view
