While creating a new field in Signals Notebook, a field type should be associated with it. Signals offers you different types of fields. The following table provides you some of the available field types with their respective definition.

| Text string | Allows the user to type a free text. |
| List | Allows the user to select one option from a list of options that you add. |
| Multi-select List | Allows the user to select many options from a list of options that you add. |
| Attribute List | Allows the user to select an option from the attribute list that you choose from the available attribute lists. You can use the type ahead feature to look for attribute lists. |
| Number/Integer | Allows the user to enter an integer number. |
| Number/Decimal | Allows the user to enter a decimal number. |
| Date/Time | Allows the user to pick a date and a time. |
| Mass | Allows the user to enter a material mass (a number). |
| Temperature | Allows the user to enter a temperature value (a number). |
| Volume | Allows the user the enter a material volume (a number). |
| Molarity | Allows the user to enter a material molarity (a number). |
| Molecular Mass | Allows the user to enter a material molecular mass (a number). |
| Percentage | Allows the user to enter a percentage value. |
| Attached File | Allows the user to attach a file. |
| External Hyperlink | Allows the user to add an external link. Please note that in addition to HTTP and HTTPS, the hyperlink attribute field supports ftp, ftps, and sftp in the link field section. |
| Internal Reference | Allows the user to add a link to an entity within Signals Notebook. Signals Notebook users can add references that appear along with an information icon that displays the corresponding reference details on hovering the mouse over the reference. |
| Autotext List | Allows the user to select one list from the available list of predefined Autotext lists. |
| Variable Measure | Allows the user to select a measure option of either concentration or amount. |
| Supplier List | Allows the user to select a supplier from a predefined list of suppliers. |
