Introduction: This article explains why you can't rename entity names (asset level and batch level) directly in Signals Data Factory. It also covers the only current way to change them and the data loss that comes with it.
Confirmed Behavior:
How SDF entity names are set
- Whichever material library you choose to sync with automatically sets the entity names in Signals Data Factory. They match the entities configured in that library's record definition.
- Only one material library can sync with SDF at a time.
- The asset level and batch level names of a custom "Compounds" type material library can only be set when the library is created. They can't be edited afterward.
- You can't rename entities directly in SDF. This is expected behavior, not a defect.
Example:
In the example below, the Compounds material library is active and syncing (Inventa Sync is checked). Its record definition has two entities, Compound (asset level) and Batch (batch level). Signals Data Factory therefore shows the entity names Compound and Batch automatically.
Signals Configuration > Material Management: The Compounds library is activated with Inventa Sync enabled. Its record definition (Compound, Batch) sets the entity names in SDF.
Changing entity names: destructive action
- The only way to change SDF entity names is to switch Material Sync to a different material library that uses the names you want (for example, "Compound" and "Batch").
- Switching Material Sync requires deleting all existing SDF projects in the tenant, along with all of their data.
- We only recommend this on a sandbox or development tenant where the existing data isn't needed.
Process Steps:
- Identify the Current Sync Configuration
- Go to Signals Configuration > Material Management.
- Under Material Activation, find the library that has Inventa Sync checked. This is the library that is syncing with SDF.
- To see the entity names, expand that library in the left panel and open Record Definition.
- Check whether the projects are on SDF 2.0 or Legacy SDF.
- Confirm a Target Library Exists
- Check whether there's a material library whose record definition already has the asset level and batch level names you want.
- Note: You can't rename an existing library's asset and batch level names after it has been created.
- Assess Data Impact
- Make sure the tenant is in a sandbox or development environment.
- Confirm that deleting all existing SDF projects and their data is acceptable.
- Contact Revvity Signals Support
- Contact Support before you change Material Sync, so the change can be reviewed for your environment.
Key Findings:
- Entity Names Come From the Synced Library:
- SDF doesn't store entity names on their own. They come from the record definition of the syncing material library.
- Not Suitable for Production:
- Switching Material Sync deletes all SDF projects and data. Don't do it on production tenants.
Critical Note: Choose the asset level and batch level names carefully when you create a material library that will sync with SDF. You can't change those names later without deleting your SDF data.
