Introduction: Starting in Signals Inventa 26.8, ISA Standard Query no longer adds the Chemical Structure column to your results automatically. This article explains what changed, why, how it works now, and how to add structures back to your analyses.
What You May Notice:
- Existing and new ISA Standard Query analyses no longer show the Chemical Structure column after the query runs.
- The option Include structure column in measurement tables in Result Layout Options is unavailable (grayed out).
- The layout preview no longer shows a chemical structure column for the summary table or the measurement tables.
What Changed and Why:
- Before 26.8: ISA Standard Query always downloaded the Chemical Structure column, even when it wasn't selected in Material Selection.
- Why it changed: Downloading structures you didn't ask for, especially large ones such as oligos and other large molecules, made queries slower. Some customers also didn't want the column. The change means queries only fetch the data you ask for.
- From 26.8: ISA downloads Chemical Structure only when it is selected as an attribute in Material Selection. This is how the product is now designed to work, not a defect.
How It Works Now:
- Summary Table / Unsummarized Table: The Chemical Structure column appears only when Chemical Structure is selected in Material Selection (Compounds tab).
- Measurement tables: Structures appear in a measurement table only when both are true:
- Chemical Structure is selected in Material Selection, and
- Include structure column in measurement tables is checked for that table in Result Layout Options.
- Dependency: If Chemical Structure isn't selected in Material Selection, the Include structure column in measurement tables option is turned off and grayed out.
- Existing analyses: The new behavior applies the next time a query runs. Saved analyses, saved searches, and templates that never had Chemical Structure selected will return results without structures.
How to Add Structures Back to Your Analyses:
- Open Material Selection
- Open the ISA Standard Query and go to Material Selection > Compounds tab.
- Add Chemical Structure
- Select Chemical Structure as an attribute. The Summary Table will now include the structure column.
- (Optional) Add Structures to Measurement Tables
- Open Result Layout Options (gear icon) and check Include structure column in measurement tables for each table that needs structures.
- Note: You can only turn this option on after Chemical Structure is selected in Material Selection.
- Run the Query and Save
- Run the query again, check that the structure column appears, and save the analysis.
- Update Saved Searches and Templates
- Repeat these steps for any saved searches or template analyses, so new analyses built from them include structures.
- Contact Revvity Signals Support
- If structures still don't appear, contact Support. Include your Signals tenant URL, your Signals Inventa and Spotfire versions, the analysis name, and a screenshot of your Material Selection and Result Layout Options.
Common Questions:
Q: Is this a bug? Structures were always there before.
No. This is a planned change in 26.8. Structures now appear only when you ask for them in Material Selection.
Q: Is adding Chemical Structure in Material Selection just a workaround?
No. Selecting Chemical Structure in Material Selection is now the supported, intended way to include structures in ISA Standard Query results.
Q: Why did my existing analyses change when nobody edited them?
The old version added the structure column whether it was selected or not. When an existing analysis runs on 26.8 or later, it follows its own Material Selection. If Chemical Structure was never selected, the column isn't returned.
Q: Why is "Include structure column in measurement tables" grayed out?
It needs Chemical Structure to be selected in Material Selection first. Select it, and the option becomes available.
Q: Will my queries be faster without structures?
They can be, especially when your data includes large structures such as oligos or other large molecules. Not downloading structures you don't need was the main reason for this change.
Q: Do I need to update every saved search and template?
Yes, for any saved search or template where you want structures in the results. Add Chemical Structure in Material Selection once and save, and analyses built from it will include structures.
Q: Is my structure data lost or deleted?
No. Your structure data hasn't changed. It just isn't downloaded into the analysis unless you select it.
Critical Note: From Signals Inventa 26.8, ISA Standard Query returns the Chemical Structure column only when Chemical Structure is selected in Material Selection. For structures in measurement tables, you must also check Include structure column in measurement tables in Result Layout Options. Update saved searches and templates so that new analyses include structures.
