When I try to open a previously saved ChemDraw file, I get an illegal operation error and ChemDraw shuts down.

ChemDraw polls printer driver for page setup information when launching. If no printer is found to be setup, older versions of ChemDraw may crash. Try setting up a printer in the Printer control panel, even if not connected to printer. If you already have one set up, delete it, and re-create it.
