When working with Signals elements opened in Office Desktop (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), the desktop version may crash or behave unpredictably due to a few common reasons:
If your app is set to open files in 'Protected View' (especially for files originating from the internet), it can cause upload failures, synchronization errors, or even instability that might lead to crashes. This is like the application putting up a safety barrier that sometimes gets in the way of smooth operation.
Crashes, timeouts, or not closing the program properly can leave behind locked files or lingering processes. Think of it like leaving a door half-open—the application thinks someone is still inside, which can cause trouble the next time you try to enter.
To help resolve these issues, try the following steps:
Disable 'Protected View' for files originating from the internet: -
In Word, Excel or PowerPoint, go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Protected View.
Uncheck 'Enable Protected View for files originating from the internet'.
Close and restart.
Make sure all office processes are fully closed: Check your Task Manager for any running Word, Excel, PowerPoint processes and end them if necessary.
Ensure there are no leftover locked files: Look in your Downloads folder or hard drive for any temporary files (they often start with a ~ symbol) and delete them.
Save and close your Word, Excel or PowerPoint files frequently to avoid leaving files in a locked state.
If the issues persist, there is likely to be some problem with the program installed on the PC. With this in mind, we recommend recreating the steps followed to recreate this issue on a different PC, in order to verify whether the error can be replicated on this second PC. If the error cannot be replicated, the problem may lie with the Office package installed.
If the issue persists after following these steps, we recommend contacting Revvity support.
