Description
IR and NMR provide complementary information about functional groups. Using both in a single Spectrus project helps confirm structural assignments.
Solution
- Import both IR and NMR spectra for the sample into the same Spectrus record or project.
- In the IR spectrum:
- Identify bands associated with key functional groups (C=O, O–H, N–H, etc.).
- In the NMR spectra:
- Locate protons or carbons consistent with these groups (e.g., aldehydic protons, alpha‑to‑carbonyl shifts).
- Cross‑check:
- A strong C=O stretch in IR should correlate with appropriate NMR shifts (e.g., deshielded 13C, alpha protons).
- Use this combined evidence to:
- Confirm the presence or absence of proposed functional groups.
- Strengthen overall structural assignment in reports.
