Spectrus: Subtracting background or solvent in IR spectra

IR spectra often contain background or solvent contributions. If a separate background or solvent spectrum is available, subtracting it can clarify analyte bands.

Solution

1. Import the sample IR spectrum and the corresponding background/solvent spectrum into Spectrus.
2. Confirm that both spectra:
   • Use the same measurement units and resolution.
   • Are aligned over the same wavenumber range.
3. Go to Process > Subtract:
   • Select the sample spectrum as the main spectrum.
   • Choose the background/solvent spectrum as the one to subtract.
4. Adjust scaling of the background if necessary to avoid over‑ or under‑subtraction.
5. Examine the resulting spectrum:
   • Confirm that solvent or background bands are reduced or removed.
   • Ensure analyte bands are preserved.
