Description
IR spectra often contain background or solvent contributions. If a separate background or solvent spectrum is available, subtracting it can clarify analyte bands.
Solution
- Import the sample IR spectrum and the corresponding background/solvent spectrum into Spectrus.
- Confirm that both spectra:
- Use the same measurement units and resolution.
- Are aligned over the same wavenumber range.
- Go to Process > Subtract:
- Select the sample spectrum as the main spectrum.
- Choose the background/solvent spectrum as the one to subtract.
- Adjust scaling of the background if necessary to avoid over‑ or under‑subtraction.
- Examine the resulting spectrum:
- Confirm that solvent or background bands are reduced or removed.
- Ensure analyte bands are preserved.
