Signals Notebook: Users cannot delete experiment elements

Summary

In Signals Notebook, users may be unable to delete experiment elements, including chemical drawings. This behavior is expected when an experiment element is configured as Mandatory in the experiment template. Mandatory elements cannot be deleted by standard users and do not display the Trash icon.

Issue: Chemical drawing cannot be deleted

Symptoms

• The Trash icon is no longer visible on a chemical drawing element.
• Users are unable to delete the chemical drawing from an experiment where deletion was previously possible.

Cause

• The chemical drawing element is marked as Mandatory in the experiment template.
• When an element is mandatory:
  • The Trash icon is removed from the experiment view.
  • Only users with the “Trash Mandatory Entities” privilege can delete the element.

Controlling deletion of experiment elements

Signals Notebook allows administrators to prevent deletion of experiment elements by marking them as Mandatory at the template level.

Behavior

• Mandatory elements cannot be deleted or trashed in experiments created from that template.
• This applies to all element types, including chemical drawings.
• Visual indicators in the template editor reflect the mandatory status.

Set an experiment element as Mandatory

To prevent users from deleting specific elements:

• Log in to Signals Notebook as an Administrator.
• Navigate to Signals Configuration > System Objects > Experiment > Templates.
• Open the experiment template to modify.
• Select the experiment element.
• In the top‑right corner of the element, click the trashcan icon with an “X” to mark it as Mandatory.
• Changes are saved automatically.

Troubleshooting and resolution

If a user reports they cannot delete an experiment element:

• Verify template configuration
  • Confirm whether the element is defined as Mandatory in the experiment template.
• Check user permissions
  • Confirm whether the user has the “Trash Mandatory Entities” privilege.
• Confirm template usage
  • Ensure the experiment was created from the template where the element is mandatory.
• Adjust configuration if needed
  • Remove the mandatory setting from the template if element deletion should be allowed.

If the element is mandatory by design and permissions are correctly assigned, no further action is required.
