Description
Some users may be unable to return borrowed licenses because the Return Borrowed button is unavailable or missing.
Solution
Verify Client-to-Server Connectivity
- On the client computer, open REGISTER.EXE.
- Click License Server button in the left lower corner.
- Select Check Connection and confirm that a successful connection message is displayed.
If the client is running an older software version than the License Server, consider updating the client. If updating is not possible, continue with the steps below.
Attempt to Return the License from the License Server computer (admin rights required)
- Open License Server Configuration as Administrator.
- Navigate to the Borrowing tab.
- Locate the affected user.
- Attempt to return the borrowed license from the server side.
If the license cannot be returned, continue with the next step.
Use the Client-Side Borrow/Return workaround:
- On the client computer, open REGISTER.EXE while connected to the License Server.
- Click Borrow and complete a borrowing operation.
- Do not close REGISTER.EXE.
- Verify whether the Return Borrowed button becomes available.
- If it does, click Return Borrowed and complete the return process.
If the Return Borrowed button remains unavailable, continue with the next section.
This procedure can clear stale borrowing records and restore proper synchronization.
- Open License Server Configuration.
- Go to the Registration Keys tab.
- Click New.
- Re-enter the main Application Registration Key for the affected license. This is typically the key that starts with 23.
- Click OK.
- No additional activation should be required.
- If multiple license IDs are affected, repeat this step for each license.
- Click Apply and OK.
- Allow the License Server service to restart. If necessary, restart it manually.
Review Borrowing Configuration
- Open the Borrowing configuration on the License Server.
- Verify that the correct borrowing groups are assigned for the applicable license type:
- Seat-based licenses
- User-based licenses
- Concurrent licenses
- If required, clear the Other option for users, seats, or both.
- Review the maximum borrowing period and reduce it if appropriate.
- Apply the changes.
Validate the Resolution
- Reopen REGISTER.EXE on the client computer.
- Confirm that both Borrow and Return Borrowed buttons are available.
- Borrow and return a license to verify the functionality.
If the issue persists after completing all steps above, collect screenshots of the License Server configuration and borrowing settings and contact Support for further investigation.
