Katalyst: Configure and use CSV templates for material import

Katalyst supports importing materials, structures, and related metadata from CSV files into a reaction design. Import failures or incomplete data population can occur when a CSV file does not match the configured import template or when CSV columns are not mapped correctly to the corresponding experiment fields.

To ensure successful import, a CSV import template must be configured in Katalyst and all required CSV headers must be mapped to the appropriate experiment fields before importing data into a reaction scheme.

Solution

Create or Update a CSV Import Template

  1. Prepare a CSV template containing only the header row (field names).
  2. Ensure that materials are not duplicated within the file.
    • If the same material should be assigned to multiple wells, specify all target wells in the Position field separated by commas (for example, A1, A3, B1, C3).
  3. As an administrator, navigate to:
    • User Menu → Manage → Files Import (Configure Files Import).
  4. Create a new import template by:
    • Providing a template name.
    • Uploading the CSV template file containing the header row.
  5. Map each File Field to the corresponding Experiment Field.
  6. For fields that may not be populated in every import, select Partly Filled where appropriate.
  7. Save the template configuration.

Note: If certain fields are not required, they may be omitted from the template and corresponding mappings.

Import the CSV File

  1. Open the reaction scheme.
  2. Right-click within the reaction scheme and select Import File.
  3. Choose the configured import template.
  4. Browse to and select the CSV file.
  5. Click OK to begin the import.

If the template includes Position, Amount, and Units fields, Katalyst will prompt you to select the target container type and size during the import process.

After a successful import, materials, structures, and associated metadata will populate the reaction scheme and Materials Table.

Additional Considerations

  • Verify that all required experiment fields exist before configuring the template.
  • If a necessary field is not available in the list of experiment fields, it must be added through backend configuration before the import can be completed.
  • When saving changes to import templates, Katalyst may display a warning that active user sessions will be invalidated. To minimize disruption, perform template updates during off-hours or notify users to save their work before proceeding.
