Description
Heat Map templates preserve the colour range settings that existed when the template was created. When the template is applied to experiments with different data ranges, the resulting colour scale may not accurately represent the current data.
Symptoms
A Heat Map template appears correctly scaled for one experiment but not for another.
Example:
- Experiment A contains values ranging from 0 to 0.5
- Experiment B contains values ranging from 0 to 2.0
After applying a template created from Experiment A to Experiment B, the Heat Map colours may appear compressed or otherwise not representative of the actual data distribution.
Cause
When configuring a Heat Map directly on an experiment, Katalyst automatically calculates the colour ranges using the current minimum and maximum values in the selected dataset.
However, when a Heat Map is saved as a template:
- The configured colour ranges are stored with the template.
- The same ranges are reused when the template is applied to other experiments.
- The ranges are not automatically recalculated when the template is loaded.
As a result, templates created from one experiment may not provide optimal colour scaling for experiments with significantly different value ranges.
Solution
To recalculate the Heat Map colour ranges based on the data in the current experiment after loading a Template:
- Open the Heat Map configuration.
- Temporarily select a different channel.
- Re-select the desired channel.
This action forces Katalyst to re-evaluate the data and automatically regenerate the colour ranges using the current experiment values.
Future Considerations
The possibility of automatically recalculating Heat Map colour ranges when applying a template to a new experiment has been identified as a potential product enhancement and has been submitted for product management review.
Currently, there are no plans or timelines that can be communicated. Until such functionality becomes available, the recommended approach is to refresh the channel selection to trigger colour range recalculation.
