Katalyst: Copy/paste of chemical structures into Katalyst fails or changes format

Description

• Users copy structures from external tools (drawing programs, ELNs, web viewers) and paste into Katalyst’s structure fields.
• Sometimes:
  • The structure does not appear.
  • Parts of the structure are missing.
  • Stereochemistry or charge states do not transfer correctly.

Solution

• Check source format:
  • Determine if the source supports a standard transferable format (e.g., molfile, SMILES, CDX/CDXML).
  • Some visual copy operations only copy images, not chemical data.
• Use explicit export/import where possible:
  • Export a molfile or SMILES from the source tool.
  • Import/upload that file into Katalyst instead of pure clipboard operations.
• Verify Katalyst version capabilities:
  • Confirm which structure formats and stereochemistry features are supported in the installed version.
• For recurring issues:
  • Capture examples of problematic structures and the source application.
  • Provide them to support so import behavior can be analyzed and improved.
